American First Airline to Test Streaming In-Flight Entertainment

American Airlines is the first US airline to test streaming in flight entertainment. Aircell's new product will allow customers to wirelessly stream content such as movies and TV shows from an in-flight library to their personal Wi-Fi enabled devices during flight.

American is starting the new in-flight video testing early this summer on two Boeing 767-200 aircraft used in transcontinental flights. Pending FAA certifications, the airline's goal is to roll out this product on Wi-Fi-enabled aircraft starting this fall. American is working with Aircell to enhance onboard connectivity by expanding in flight Wi-Fi to its narrow body fleet, including additional MD-80's and domestic Boeing 757-200 aircraft, so all of its domestic aircraft will offer the service within the continental United States.

Installation will begin this summer and continue through 2012. In addition, American continues to install Wi-Fi service on its entire fleet of 737-800 aircraft. Aircell uses an air-to-ground system with three small antennas installed outside the aircraft that connect to Aircell's exclusive nationwide mobile broadband network. Pricing will be announced closer to the launch date and after the testing period.
